Creators can sell comics as the usual 24-page book or as a graphic novel of 60-200 pages or more. When you want to sell comics as a 24-page book, the comic should come as a series of separate issues. In this way, it can be cheaper to produce. You can have a series with 5 numbers that come out in different periods of the year. The income from issue 1 can be used to cover expenses from issue 2. In my opinion, this is probably the best way to start for inexperienced comic creators.
However, if a creator thinks that making a graphic novel is more convenient for him / her to start with, you can do it under two conditions. You have the funds and a marketing plan. I say this because marketing is the most exhausting part any creator experiences when producing a product. These days, publishing your comic book doesn’t have to take fifty dollars out of your pocket if you write and draw yourself. This method is known as publishing on demand. For first-time comic creators, the difficulty of marketing their comic can be indie comic.
The creators who successfully sell the comics they created are usually those who have experience and expertise in producing comics. It would be easy for someone known for working on titles like X-men or Spiderman to get out of Marvel and produce their own comics or sell their comics. This was the case with Todd McFarlane. McFarlane achieved star status in the Marvel comics. When he left Marvel, he participated with other illustrators in the start of the Image comics. Once he published his title called Spawn, it became an almost instant hit due to McFarlane’s popularity. The thing is, not everyone who wants to create comics would have the privilege of working for a giant publisher like Marvel Comics, and not everyone who works for Marvel will become popular.
What I see is that there are two ways one can enter the comics industry by creating comics and selling them. Both ways involve developing a name for yourself. First, it could be accomplished by integrating with existing publishers and publishers, being hired on staff at an editorial office, and being published by a smaller publisher. The second way is by independent publishing. Let me add, both ways are extremely difficult, can take years to get positive results, and could cost you a lot of money.
The encouraging news is that there are other ways to get your work out to the audience for less money or time. Thanks to the rise of technology, the conventional way (by way of big publishers) of breaking into the comic industry to sell comics is not the only way. I will explain.
The biggest and toughest hurdle comic creators have to overcome is marketing their comic or getting an audience for their comics. Once people know that your comic book exists and you like the comic book, selling comics would be a lot easier.
The first and most important thing is that when you want to sell comics you have to have an attractive and good quality comic to sell. Develop an engaging comic that you know a certain group of people would like.
The next step in selling comics is to market it to the people you made the comic for. The people whose needs your comic meets. This way, you will almost certainly have a purchase. You can do this by creating a website for your comic and then referring interested people to the website to review your comic.
Creating a comic and marketing it over the Internet is now one of the most convenient ways to get your comic recognized. Like I said before, once your comic is recognized and you like it, selling comics would be natural.
